Twelfth Night
Twelfth Night is one of Shakespeare's comedy plays, focusing on twins Viola and Sebastian. The play is an endless series of mistaken identity, with a love triangle woven in. Orsino loves Olivia. Olivia loves Cesario. Cesario is actually Viola in disguise. Sebastian loves Oliva but is presumed dead. In the end, Sebastian is revealed to be alive, and he and Olivia end up together as well as Orsino and Viola. (Roberts)
Sounds confusing, but the play was brought to current day life with the 2006 movie She's the Man starring Amanda Bynes. The characters were very close; Viola the main character in the film (Viola), Sebastion, her brother (Cesario), Olivia, the love interest (Olivia), and Duke Orsino who loves Olivia (Orsino). The adaptation to a current day high school setting based around a soccer team, when the girls soccer team is cut from the athletic program, Viola goes to her brother's school disguised as him to play for the boys team. Sebastian goes on tour with his band without telling their parents, while everything gets revealed at the big rival soccer match and true identities and loves are made known. (Stein)
This film adaptation allowed Shakespeare to be brought to a whole new audience who might not otherwise know about Shakespeare's plays.
